2015

Groete
Koekoes

This young seal fully accepted my presence and allowed me to come very close. After a while it became quite windy and we both got caught in this sandstorm.

It was one of those days, great for landscape photography as rain clouds raced across the sky leaving gaps for shafts of sunlight in between. It was then I saw the church. The church and the mountainside were bathed in that gorgeous soft late autumn light.

I took this photo from our balloon as we were drifting over this remarkable landscape of rock formations in Cappadocia, Turkey. The sky was filled with colorful hot air balloons and in this moment all the balloons seemed to align perfectly to allow me to capture this shot. It was s…

Horizontal Lightning

According to Nasa, horizontal lightning, also known as intracloud, usually occurs within clouds high in the atmosphere.

Guided by the laptop weather map reflected in his window, Tim Samaras rushes to catch up to a dying thunderstorm.
He hopes to be the first to photograph the split-second event that triggers a lightning strike.

Horizontal, cloud-to-cloud lightning bolts—called anvil crawlers, for their tendency to “crawl” along the
bottom of anvil-shaped storm clouds—light up the sky near Greensburg, Kansas.

Margate Shell Grotto

Image
Buried deep underground in small English town of Margate, Kent; is a grotto shrouded in complete mystery.  Adorned with 4.6 million shells and 70ft of winding underground passages leading to a rectangular chamber, this shell grotto is undoubtedly a remarkable site to behold. Story has it that in 1835, a laborer was going about his usual field work, but when he struck the soil with his spade, it sank into the earth. The farmer realized that he was standing on something hollow, but was unable to see anything from the surface. Word spread around town, and a local school teacher volunteered his young son, Joshua, to be lowered into the hole with a candle. Upon emerging from the mysterious cavern, Joshua described rooms filled with hundreds of thousands of carefully arranged shells.
The Shell Grotto is adorned with symbols mosaiced in millions of shells, symbols that celebrate life as well as reminders of death.  The Shell Grotto hosts a passage, a rotunda and an altar chamber.  The shells in…
