The world largest container ship, longest ship currently in service and is propelled by the largest diesel engine ever manufactured.
By mid-year 2006 the construction project was going well when on June 9th the accommodation block was devastated by fire.

The Emma Mærsk was about six-seven weeks delayed.
The delay caused by a devastating fire in the accommodation quarters in the early days of June.
A welding job on the main deck, close to the end of working hours, led to a fire that totally destroyed the almost finished accommodation quarters and all the equipment in the wheelhouse.

The fire was large and devastating.

Spicy Paprika Pork chops and red Pepper Couscous.
It is so quick to make and the flavours are so vibrant.
· 2 thin pork chops
· juice and zest of half a lemon
· 1 heaped tsp paprika
· 100g roasted peppers in oil (if you can't find this, use fresh ones and roast them in the oven first)
· 300g coucous
· 350ml chicken stock
· fresh or dried parsley
· fresh or dried basil
How to make Paprika Pork and Pepper Couscous
Marinade the pork chops in a mixture of the lemon juice, zest, paprika and a spoonful of the roasted pepper oil
Grill the chops for a few minutes on each side. Spoon any excess marinade onto the pork chops when you turn them over.
In the meantime, slice the roasted peppers and add to a bowl with the couscous
Pour in the stock, cover with a plate and leave for about 5 minutes.
Fluff it up with a fork and mix in the herbs.
Serve in a bowl with the pork chops!

Fish With Transparent Head, "Barrel" Eyes
With a head like a fighter-plane cockpit, a Pacific barreleye fish shows off its highly sensitive,
barrel-like eyes--topped by green, orblike structures.
The fish, discovered alive in the deep water off California's central coast by the Monterey Bay
Aquarium Research Institute, is the first specimen of its kind to be found with its soft transparent dome intact.
The 6-inch (15-centimeter) barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) had been known since 1939,
but only from mangled specimens dragged to the surface by nets.

The beady bits on the front of the Pacific barreleye fish in this picture, aren't eyes but smell organs.
The grayish, barrel-like eyes are beneath the green domes, which may filter light.
In this picture the eyes are pointing upward--the better to see prey above in the darkness of the barreleye's deep-sea home.
Since the eyes are upright tubes, "it just looked like [they only] looked straight up.
But by watching live fish from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and by bringing a barrelfish to an aquarium for study,
the scientists discovered that the eyes can pivot, like a birdwatcher pointing binoculars.

The transparent-headed Pacific barreleyes may steal fish from siphonophores--jellies that can grow to more than 33 feet (10 meters) long.

The barreleye's flat, horizontal fins may allow it to swim very precisely among the siphonophore's stinging tentacles--and if the fish fumbles,
the clear, helmet-like shield may protect its eyes.

The barreleye lives more than 2,000 feet (600 meters) beneath the ocean's surface, where the water is almost inky.
The transparent-headed fish spends much of its time motionless, eyes upward.
The green cap atop each of the fish's eyes filters out what little sunlight makes it down from the surface,
allowing the fish to focus on the bioluminescence of small jellies or other prey passing overhead.

Meng vla, kakao, suiker en voeg van 500 ml melk by
Kook res van die melk Gooi by vla mengsel, en gooi terug in kastrol en kook dit net op. Roer aanhoudend.
Meng gelatien en kouewater en laat staan om dik te word.
Gooi dan die gelatien by melkmengsel. Roer to dit opgelos is.
Laat afkoel. Klop Idealmelk styf en vou in die mengsel.

A fire truck moves away from out of control flames from a bushfire in the Bunyip Sate Forest
near the township of Tonimbuk, 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of Melbourne.
Walls of flame roared across southeastern Australia, razing scores of homes, forests and farmland in the sunburned country's worst wildfire disaster in a quarter century.

The state of Victoria in southern Australia has recently been hit with hundreds of bush fires during a record-breaking heatwave - temperatures well above 38°C (100°F).
Unfortunately, these fires have proved to be the deadliest in Australian history.
The fires mostly appear to have been started by lightning - however a few appear to have been arson, and are under investigation - entire towns being declared crime scenes.

More than 40 blazes raged across two states as a once-in-a-century heatwave pushed the mercury as high as

FELICITY SE VLASKYWE
1 pak (200g) Cream Cracker-beskuitjies
1 Liter melk
250 ml suiker
60g botter of margarien
120 ml koekmeel
80 ml vlapoeier
2 ml sout
100 ml koue water
3 eiers geskei
5 ml vanieljegeursel
500 ml versiersuiker, gesif
40 ml kookwater
Metode:
Smeer 'n vlak glasbak van 35 x 25 x 5 cm.
Pak 15 van die beskuitjies in rye van 5 x 3 op die boom van die bak sodat die breeklyne van al die beskuitjies in dieselfde rigting lê.
Verhit die melk in 'n groot kastrol tot kookpunt.
Voeg die suiker en botter of margarien by en roer tot gesmelt. Haal van die stoof af.
Meng die koekmeel, vlapoeier, sout en koue water deeglik.
Voeg die eiergele by en klits goed.
Klits 'n bietjie van die melkmengsel geleidelik in die vlamengsel in.
Giet terug in die kastrol by die res van die melk.
Roer aanhoudend oor lae hitte en kook sowat 5 minute tot dik.
Haal van die stoof af en roer die vanieljegeursel in.
Klits die eierwitte tot sagte punte vorm en vou liggies met 'n metaallepel in die vlamengsel in.
Giet die warm vla oor die beskuitjies in die voorbereide bak.
Bedek die vla met 'n verdere 15 beskuitjies in rye van 5 x 3 sodat die breeklyne in dieselfde rigting as die onderste laag s'n is.
Laat die vlavulsel afkoel en plaas in die yskas om heeltemal koud te word.
Meng die versiersuiker en kookwater tot 'n smeerbare versiersel.
Giet dit stadig oor die beskuitjies en smeer eweredig oor.
Hou dit in die yskas tot benodig.
Sny die vlaskywe so groot soos die halwe kraakbeskuitjies en sit voor.
Maak 15 skywe.
GEORGE SE KOURABIEDES
(Griekse Brosbrood)
125g ongesoute botter
125g margarien
125 ml suiker
1 eiergeel
500 ml koekmeel
125 ml Maizena
10 ml brandewyn
2 ml fyn naeltjies
150 ml amandels, gerooster en fyngekap
heel naeltjies
30 ml versiersuiker
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 160°C.
Smeer 'n bakplaat.
Room die botter, margarien en suiker.
Voeg die eiergeel by en klits tot liggeel en romerig.
Voeg die koekmeel, mielieblom, brandewyn, fyn naeltjies en fyn amandels by en knie tot 'n gladde deeg.
Plaas in die yskas tot hanteerbaar. (sowat 30 minute)
Rol die deeg ongeveer 3 cm dik uit en druk vorms met 'n koekiedrukker uit.
Steek 'n heel naeltjie in elkeen.
Plaas die vorms op die bakplaat en bak vir 15 - 20 minute tot strooikleurig.
Sprinkel versiersuiker kwistig oor die warm koekies.
Maak ongeveer 10 koekies.
BART SE CréME BRULéE
500 ml room
10 ml vanieljegeursel
5 eiergele
375 ml strooisuiker
ekstra strooisuiker om oor te sprinkel
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 150°C.
Bring die room tot kookpunt in 'n middelslag kastrol.
Verwyder van die hitte en roer die vanieljegeursel in.
Klits die eiergele en strooisuiker tot lig en romerig.
Giet die room versigtig by die eiermengsel en meng deeglik.
Giet die vlamengsel in 4 ramekins en bak 20 minute in 'n waterbad in 'n voorverhitte oond tot net gestol. Laat in die waterbad afkoel en plaas daarna oornag in die yskas.
Sprinkel net voor opdiening strooisuiker oor die vla en karamaliseer dit met 'n blaasvlam of onder die warm oondrooster.
Genoeg vir 4 mense.
CHARMAINE SE KARAMELFUDGE
160g margarien of botter
75 ml gouestroop
1 blik (397g) kondensmelk
325 ml melk, verhit tot kookpunt
6 x 250 ml suiker
250 ml koekmeel
2 ml kremetart
10 ml karamelgeursel
Metode:
Smeer 'n bakpan of vlak bak van minstens 28 x 18 x 3 cm.
Smelt die botter of margarien en gouestroop saam in 'n groot dikboomkastrol oor lae hitte.
Voeg die kondensmelk en kookmelk by en meng.
Meng die suiker en koekmeel, voeg dit by die melkmengsel en meng deeglik.
Roer die mengsel aanhoudend oor lae hitte tot kookpunt en voeg die kremetart by.
Kook dit sowat 25 minute oor lae hitte tot die sagtebalstadium en roer aanhoudend met 'n houtspaan om aanbrand te voorkom.
Haal die mengsel van die stoof af, roer die karamelgeursel in en klits met 'n houtlepel tot dit begin styf word.
Giet die fudge in die voorbereide pan of vlak bak en maak bo-op gelyk.
Sny dit in 2,5 cm blokkies voor dit heeltemal hard is.
Maak ongeveer 60 blokkies.
MARCO SE VRUGTEBROODJIE
675 ml water
500 ml ligbruinsuiker
250g pitlose rosyntjies
5 middelslag geelwortels, grof gerasper
30 ml botter
5 ml fyn kaneel
2 ml fyn neutmuskaat
knippie fyn naeltjies
2 x 250 ml meelblom
10 ml koeksoda
10 ml bakpoeier
1 ml sout
250 ml gekapte okkerneute of pekanneute
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 160°C.
Voer die boom van 'n 26 x 9 x 7 cm broodpan uit en olie dit liggies.
Meng die water, suiker, rosyntjies, geelwortels, botter, kaneel, neutmuskaat en naeltjies in 'n groot kastrol.
Bring tot kookpunt, bedek en laat 10 minute prut.
Giet in 'n groot mengbak en laat staan tot heeltemal afgekoel.
Sif die droë bestanddele saam.
Roer die wortelmengsel in en voeg die neute by.
Giet die beslag in die voorbereide broodpan en bak 1 uur in 'n voorverhitte oond tot ferm.
Keer op 'n afkoelrak uit en laat afkoel.
Sny in skywe en sit saam met botter voor.
Maak 1 groot brood of 20 snye.
MARIA SE APPEL EN ROSYNTJIEMUFFINS
125g margarien
125 ml suiker
2 eiers
1 blik (385g) appelskywe, grof gekap
125 ml pitlose rosyntjies
250 ml melk
2 ml vanieljegeursel
500 ml koekmeel
20 ml bakpoeier
2 ml sout
kaneelsuiker om oor te strooi
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 200°C.
Smeer 18 holtes van muffinpanne.
Room die margarien en suiker.
Voeg die eiers een vir een by en klits die mengsel tot lig en donsig.
Die mengsel kan dalk skif, maar sal regkom sodra die res van die bestanddele bygevoeg word.
Voeg die appels, rosyntjies, melk en vanieljegeursel by en roer tot gemeng.
Voeg die droë bestanddele by en meng net tot die meel aangeklam is - dit sal nog klonterig wees.
Skep die muffinpanne se holtes driekwart vol beslag en sprinkel kaneelsuiker oor.
Bak vir 20 - 25 minute in die voorverhitte oond.

HILDA SE DADELVINGERS
250g margarien
250 ml suiker
500g dadels, fyngesny
1 eier goed geklits
1 pak (200g) Mariebeskuitjies, in stukkies gebreek
100g groen kersies
100g rooi kersies
klapper om oor te strooi
Metode:
Smeer 'n 16 x 26 cm koekpan.
Smelt die margarien en suiker saam oor lae hitte sonder dat die mengsel verbruin.
Voeg die dadels en eier by en roer baie goed sodat die eier egalig ingemeng word.
Voeg die beskuitjies en heel kersies by, meng deeglik en haal van die stoof af.
Gooi die mengsel in die voorbereide pan en maak bo-op gelyk met 'n mes.
Strooi 'n bietjie klapper oor en laat koud word.
Sny in vingers van 3 x 6 cm.
Maak 36 - 40 koekies.
OUBAAS SE HERTZOGGIES
Kors:
450 ml koekmeel (ongesif afgemeet)
35 ml strooisuiker
10 ml bakpoeier
1 ml sout
125g margarien, by kamertemperatuur
3 eiergele van ekstragroot eiers
15 ml koue water
Vulsel:
50 - 75 ml fyn appelkooskonfyt
3 eierwitte van ekstra-groot eiers
300 ml suiker
500 ml klapper (160g)
Metode:
Kors: Sif die koekmeel, strooisuiker, bakpoeier en sout saam.
Vryf die botter of margarien liggies met die vingerpunte in tot goed gemeng.
Klits die eiergele en water effens, voeg by die meelmengsel en meng tot 'n sagte hanteerbare deeg.
Voeg nog 'n bietjie water by as die deeg te styf is.
Knie die deeg goed, bedek en laat eenkant staan.
Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C.
Smeer die holtes van die kolwyntjiepanne.
Rol die deeg dun uit op 'n meelbestrooide werkoppervlak.
Druk groot sirkels met 'n koekiedrukker uit en voer die panne se holtes daarmee uit.
Vulsel: Skep 'n teelepel appelkooskonfyt in die middel van elke korsie.
Klits die eierwitte tot styf.
Klits die suiker geleidelik in.
Roer die klapper in.
Skep lepels vol van die vulsel op die appelkooskonfyt op die korsies.
Bak die koekies 20 - 25 minute op die middelste oondrak.
Laat hulle effens afkoel in die panne en haal dan versigtig uit en laat heeltemal afkoel op
'n draadrak.
Maak 12 - 15 koekies.
EMMA SE SJOKOLADEKOEK
Moir's se sjokoladekoekmengsel
2 eiers
50 ml olie
200 ml melk
Vulsel:
1 blik karamelkondensmelk
Versiersel:
75g margarien by kamertemperatuur
480 ml versiersuiker
60 ml kakaopoeier
kookwater
heel okkerneute om te versier
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C en smeer 2 ronde 20cm koekpanne.
Besprinkel liggies met meel.
Koek: Plaas die koekmengsel in 'n groot mengbak.
Voeg die eiers, olie en melk by en klits ongeveer 1 minuut stadig met 'n elektriese klitser.
Klits daarna 2 minute teen die hoogste spoed.
Giet die beslag in die voorbereide panne en bak vir 30 minute.
Laat 10 minute in die panne afkoel en keer dan op 'n draadrak uit en laat heeltemal afkoel.
Vulsel: Smeer die karamelkondensmelk op die een helfte van die koek en plaas die ander helfte bo-op.
Versiersel: Klits die botter en versiersuiker tot gemeng.
Los die kakaopoeier in 'n bietjie kookwater op en voeg dit by.
Klits baie goed.
Smeer versiersel bo-op die koek en versier met heel okkeurnete.
Sprinkel ekstra kakaopoeier liggies oor.
MANDLA SE KARAMELKAASKOEK
Kors:
1 pakkie (200g) Tennisbeskuitjies, gekrummel
60g margarien, gesmelt
Vulsel:
30 ml gelatien
150 ml kookwater
2 pakkies Creamo-roompoeier
300 ml yswater
500g romerige maaskaas
250ml strooisuiker
30 ml suurlemoensap
1 pakkie karamelkitspoeding
400 ml melk
flake, gekrummel om oor te strooi vir versiering
Metode:
Voer die kante van 'n veerklamppan met waspapier uit.
Kors: Meng die krummels en botter en druk op die boom vas.
Plaas in yskas tot benodig.
Vulsel: Los die gelatien in die kookwater op.
Klits die 2 pakkies Creamo 2 minute saam met die yswater.
Klits die maaskaas, strooisuiker en suurlemoensap saam.
Vou eers dié mengsel in die geklitste room in en daarna die afgekoelde gelatien.
Klits die poeding en melk 2 minute lank en vou dit in die mengsel in.
Skep die mengsel oor die kors in die pan.
Hou oornag in die yskas tot verm.
Versier met fyn flake.
Maak 1 groot tert.
DE WAAL SE BESKUITJIESTRUIF
1 pakkie aarbeijelliepoeier
225 ml kookwater
225 ml koue water
1 blik aarbeie, gedreineer
500 ml dik vla
1 blik karamelkondensmelk
1 pak Tennisbeskuitjies, grof gebreek
125 ml pekanneute, gekap
Metode:
Los die jelliepoeier in die kookwater op.
Voeg die koue water by en meng.
Laat dit in die yskas stol.
Breek die jellie liggies op met 'n vurk.
Skep an die vrugte onder in 4 glase.
Skep van die vla oor en daarna 'n bietjie kondensmelk.
Pak van die gebreekte beskuitjies op en skep van die jellie oor.
Sprinkel van die pekanneute oor.
Herhaal die lae tot al die bestanddele opgebruik is.
Plaas die beskuitjiestruif in die yskas.
Sit voor my roomys of geklitste room
Genoeg vir 4 mense.
PAULA SE TEESKONS
500 ml koekmeel
15 ml bakpoeier
2 ml sout
75 ml strooisuiker
65g margarien
1 eier
125 ml melk
Opdiening:
1 pakkie Creamo
150 ml yswater
aarbeikonfyt
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 200°C. Smeer 'n bakplaat.
Sif die meel, bakpoeier, sout en strooisuiker saam.
Vryf die margarien met die vingers in tot die mengsel soos krummels lyk.
Meng die eier en melk en voeg by die meelmengsel.
Meng liggies net tot al die bestanddele aangeklam is.
Druk die deeg tot 20 mm dik op 'n meelbestrooide oppervlak uit.
Sny sirkels met 'n koekiedrukker uit.
Plaas op die voorbereide bakplaat en bak vir 15 minute.
Opdiening: Klits die Creamo 2 minute met die yswater.
Sit die skons voor saam met aarbeikonfyt en geklitste room.
Maak ongeveer 8 skons.
DEZI SE KOLWYNTJIES
125 g margarien
200ml suiker
5 ml vanieljegeursel
2 eiers, liggies geklits
500 ml koekmeel
10 ml bakpoeier
knippie sout
160 ml melk
Botterversiersel:
60g botter
250 ml versiersuiker
10 ml water
knippie sout
2 ml vanieljegeursel
sjokolade vermicelli
kleurstrooisels
Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 190°C.
Pak 20 papierdoppies in muffinpannetjies.
Room die botter of margarien en suiker saam tot lig en donsig.
Voeg eers die vanieljegeursel by en daarna die eiers 'n bietjie op 'n slag.
Sif die meel, bakpoeier en sout 3 keer saam en vou dit om die beurt met die melk in die bottermengsel in.
Skep die beslag in die papierdoppies en bak vir 15 minute.
Laat op 'n afkoelrak afkoel.
Versiersel: Meng die botter, versiersuiker, water, sout en vanieje tot glad.
Smeer oor die kolwyntjies en besprinkel met vermicelli en kleurstrooisels.
Maak 20 koekies.

Kors:
1 Pakkie (200g) Tennisbeskuitjies, gekrummel
60g margarien gesmelt
Vulsel
12 ml gelatien
140 ml water
30 ml suurlemoensap
4 eiers, geskei
250 ml strooisuiker
knippie sout
paar druppels groen kleursel
2 stafies peppermentsjokolade, gekrummel
ekstra peppermentsjokolade om mee te versier
Metode:
Kors: Meng die krummels en botter en druk dit op die boom van 'n tertbak vas.
Plaas in yskas tot benodig.
Vulsel:-Week die gelatien in die helfte van die water.
Klits die res van die water, suurlemoensap, eiergele, die helfte van die strooisuiker en
sout saam in 'n swaarboomkastrol.
Verhit die mengsel oor lae hitte terwyl gedurig geroer word, tot dit verdik.
Roer die gelatienmengsel in en laat afkoel.
Klits die eierwitte tot stywe punte vorm en klits die res van die suiker geleidelik in.
Vou die mengsel saam met diekleursel in die eiergeelmengsel in.
Vou daarna die gekrummelde peppermentsjokolade in en skep in die kors.
Rasper die ekstra peppermentsjoldade oor en plaa in die yskas tot gestol.

Until August of 2000 it was thought that the largest living organism was a fungus of the same species
(Armillaria ostoyae) that covered 1,500 acres (600 hectares) found living in the state of Washington.

Spreading and killing trees.

This most recent find was estimated to cover over 2,200 acres (890 hectares) and be at least 2,400 years old, possibly older.

To go into the forest where this giant makes its home you would not look at it and see a huge,
looming mushroom. Armillaria grows and spreads primarily underground and the sheer bulk
of this organism lies in the earth, out of sight.
Occasionally, during the fall season, this specimen will send up golden-colored "honey mushrooms"
that are the visible evidence of its hulking mass beneath.

Scientists have not yet begun to attempt to estimate the weight of this specimen of Armillaria.

How is it possible for a single fungus to get so big?
Scientists who study this species of funges have postulated that the huge size may be a function of the dry climate in eastern Oregon. Spores

The fungus, also known as the honey mushroom, spreads below ground by sending out these stringy rhizomorphs.
have a hard time establishing new organisms, making room for the old-timers to spread.

Without competition from other specimens this enormous Armillaria has been able to grow and spread unchecked.

The largest lake of Central America, in southwest Nicaragua.

The freshwater lake contains fish, such as tuna and sharks,
usually found only in salt water because it was part of the Caribbean Sea
until land masses rose around it in prehistoric times.

Lake Nicaragua, 3,089 sq mi (8,001 sq km), c.100 mi (160 km) long
and up to 45 mi (72 km) wide.
It is drained into the Caribbean Sea by the San Juan River.

Sharks that lives in Lake Nicaragua is a species of shark that has been adapting for a
long time in the lake since it's being seperated from the sea millions of years ago.

How Sharks Survive in Fresh Water
For most shark species, spending a day in fresh water would be like
placing a human on the moon without a spacesuit.
It could not survive due to the inhospitable surrounding environment.
A process called osmosis is central to the problem.
Osmosis is when a fluid moves through a semi-permeable membrane from a solution
with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration,
until there is an equal concentration of liquid on both sides of the membrane.
The dissolved substances, in this case, primarily involve sodium and chloride.
Since sharks evolved in salt water, they tend to have very salty bodies.
Even sharks in fresh water contain more than twice the amount of salt and chloride
as more common freshwater fishes.
In theory, they should burst like an overfilled water balloon, given the osmosis effect,
but they have come up with an effective answer to the problem -- they urinate a lot.
Thomas Thorson studied bull sharks living in Lake Nicaragua and found these huge fish
take in a lot of extra water, as expected, but they excrete much of it as dilute urine,
at a rate of over 20 times that of typical saltwater sharks.
That means their kidneys must work extra hard, utilizing additional energy.
Like people who become accustomed to life in low oxygen regions, however,
sharks in fresh water appear to adapt to what would seem to be formidable conditions.
